CHAPTER 1:

Yulia tapped her pen impatiently on the edge of her book as she counted down the last minutes of the day. She stared at the wall clock in the classroom intently, hoping mabey doing so would speed up time, but so far she had no luck. It seemed like the seconds were passing slower and slower, laughing in her face. The teacher’s voice at the head of the class had become a monotonous murmur in Yulia’s mind for sometime now. All of her energy was focused on the clock. Not the lesson, not the teacher, not her best friend sitting next to her who was trying, without any luck at all, to pass Yulia a note. One minute left to go. Yulia gathered her books in her arm as she counted down the last few seconds.

“Ms. Volkova, would you mind explaining to me and the rest of the class exactly where you think you’re going?” The frustrated teacher asked Yulia. Yulia whipped her head around and faced the teacher, keeping watch on the clock out of the corner of her eye. She didn’t answer him.

“Ms. Volkova, where do you think you’re going?” He asked again. Yulia smiled childishly at her teacher.

“Home.” She replied. Before the teacher could say another thing, the final bell rang and all the students in her class got up to leave. Yulia stood up from her desk and ran out of her class, not wanting to be there for a second longer. It was Friday, finally! The weekend! And there was no way Yulia was going to waste a second of those precious 2 and a half days at school! Sasha, her best friend, joined her minutes later at their lockers, giggling wildly.

“Yulia, you should have seen the look on Mr. Vargas’ face after you left! It was priceless! He was steaming!” Sasha explained, barely being able to contain her laughter.

“What can I say? I have a nack for pissing him off!” Yulia said nonchalantly, poking her very porcupine-like spiky head out from inside her locker and smiled at Sasha.

“You got that right!” Sasha said, rolling her eyes at the thought of the grumpy old man that taught them History. Yulia yanked her backpack out of her locker and slammed it’s door shut, yelling triumphantly, “IT’S THE WEEKEND!”

“Hell yeah, it is, and you know what happens tonight?” Sasha asked, turning to Yulia. They both grinned excitedly and exclaimed, “PARTYING AT THE CLUBS!” Both girls jumped around excitedly. They’d been waiting for Friday eagerly all week. Sasha sqealed happily. Yulia grabbed her hand and began dragging her down the school hallway to the exit.

“Come on, Sasha, let’s get to your house and get ready!!!” Yulia whined.

*AT SASHA’S*

Yulia grabbed a large green bottle out of her back and flicked open the cap. Looking into a mirror hanging on Sasha’s bedroom wall, she poured the thick gel all over her head, spreading it through her hair with her fingers. She could see Sasha laying back on her bed staring up at the ceiling from the mirror.

“Sasha, check it out,” She said, grabbing the small blonde’s attention. Sasha sat up on her elbows from her bed and looked at Yulia in the mirror. Yulia turned around and smiled at her best friend. Suddenly she leaned forward, almost touching the ground, and flipped her head back, making all her hair stand up on end with the gel holding it in place.

“I’m pinhead!!” Yulia exclaimed. Sasha exploded into a fit of laughter.

“Look’s like you put your finger in an electrical socket!” She laughed, “You better fix that before the gel sets, otherwise you’ll kill someone on the dance floor!”

“Ha, ha, ha, very funny.” Yulia replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She reached for a comb in her bag and began calming her crazy hair. Sasha laid back on her bed and put her hands behind her head, staring back up at her ceiling.

“I’m thinking of bringing a friend of mine to the club with us tonight,” She said randomly, not looking up from her position on her bed.

“Oh yeah?” Yulia asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, I think you’d like her. She’s transferring to our school next year from my old school. She and I were good friends way back when.” Sasha continued, sitting up fully. Yulia turned around and leaned back against the wall looking at Sasha.

“Hmm, tell me more about this ‘me liking her’ business.” Yulia said, tapping the end of the comb against her chin in thought. She’d never had a girlfriend, she just knew she liked them and had no intention of hooking up with a boy. Not tonight, not ever.

“Well, I’m not exactly sure about whether she’s into girls yet, but when I talked to her about you she seemed very interested. I dunno, I don’t wanna make a fool of myself so don’t get your hopes up and DON’T say I thought she was, ok?” Sasha said in a hurry, trying to cover up for herself.

“All right, all right, don’t get your undies in a bundle, I promise I wont say anything. Sheesh. Anyway, bring her along, I wanna meet this chick. What’s her name?” Yulia asked, trying to learn more about the mysterious girl.

“Lena, Lena Katina.”
